In looking back over my postings in 2019, I am amazed at the diversity of subject matter covered. Adoption really is a multi-faceted and complicated issue.

The good news is that DNA testing and social media have increased the likelihood adoptees and birthparents can reconnect without the use of search angels.  State laws continue to evolve, and these new statutes help adoptees from the closed adoption era to access their personal story.

So much to cheer about, yet so much to flesh out. Improving communications between those touched by adoption and fighting for the right to information are still solid goals for the new decade.

In 2019, I wrote about forgiveness, fantasies, DNA testing, family reunions, birthdays, dreams, abortion, and rejection.  I weighed in on the differences between open and closed adoption.  I discussed late discovery adoption, and the power of words. On the anniversary of my birth father’s death, I wondered how to honor the man I never met. During National Adoption Month, I shared about meeting my birth mother in November of 2011.

It’s hard to pick the top five, but based on reader comments, here’s what resonated most:

In “Quirky DNA Results”, my children’s DNA profiles confound my twin sister and me.

In “Adoptive Parents: Don’t Make Your Child’s Adoption An Either Or Situation”, guilt and loyalty emerge as common emotions in adoptees when it comes to launching an adoption search.

Forgiveness is a theme that resonated with many readers.  “How Do You Know When It’s Time To Forgive?”  offers valid points for serious consideration.

Sharing adoption fantasies was a subject with which I had to dig deep to share in “What Was Your Childhood Fantasy?” I would love to receive other fantasies from brave adopted souls.

In “First Cousins”, I discuss meeting up with two blood relatives.  I’d been longing to reach out to these first cousins via a genetic genealogy site, but delayed doing so in deference to my birth mother’s need for time and privacy.

Oh, and because this subject meant a lot to me, here’s a bonus piece for you to consider as a re-read:

In “I Know It’s Not Mother’s Day”, I reveal one of my most valued supporters during the grueling process of finding and reuniting with my very reluctant birth mother.
