Holiday shopping, gift giving and family gatherings have climaxed. Last year is in the rear view mirror and 2019 has burst through the door. Whether you call it resolution making, setting intentions, or establishing goals, the clock has started ticking.
Before I began writing my memoir in 2018 (it’s about my search for birth relatives), my intentions rarely varied. Lose five pounds, stop sipping wine during the week, cut down on carbs, finish the novel baking in my desk drawer, and re-organize the storage room. Most years, I was good on the first three until late January. The heftier goals remained solid on the to-do list but got pushed out until larger chunks of time materialized.
Last year at this time, I changed my practice of resolution making. I realized that I would forever be chiseling at five pounds and balancing a healthy lifestyle, so I scrapped the idea of resolutions altogether and got serious about goal setting. For 2018, I had been determined to get a solid draft of my memoir down. My writing went from sometime hobby to a late in life second career.
In 2018, I hired a writing coach, enrolled in memoir writing craft courses, launched two blogs and an author website, and dipped my toe into creating a social media presence. I submitted my writing to the literary world, received the expected rejections, but managed to get a few pieces published. Spring of 2019 will find me penning a regular column for The Beacher, a weekly paper serving the NW Indiana beach communities.
As 2019 progresses, I will be searching for an editor, an agent, and a publisher for my work-in-progress called, Closed: a memoir, How I Met My Mother. Also on the docket is reworking my website with SEO (search engine optimization) in mind. I fancy more ‘page likes’ on my author FB page, and more readership for my two blogs: Touched By Adoption and That Girl This Life. 2019 will find me pushing literary submittals and developing a thicker skin when rejections hit the inbox. I plan to deliver more crisper and unique creative content in future posts for both blogs.
My goals are set for 2019 and so are those pesky intentions related to a healthy lifestyle. My hope for you dear reader is that you have developed your own idea of what a great 2019 will mean and that you are ultimately successful!
