ADOPTION IN AMERICA

On March 29th at 7PM CST, I will be participating in a virtual panel discussion titled: ADOPTION IN AMERICA with notable authors: Lisa Wingate, Gabrielle Glaser, and Jeff Hoffmann. The event will be hosted by Andersons Bookshops (Naperville, IL). You can register now for the virtual event, here.
This panel brings together two novelists and two nonfiction authors who have all written compelling books centering on the complicated topic of adoption. The conversation promises to be both enlightening and thought
provoking. We will cover how open adoption differs from closed adoption and address the “right to know” versus “right to privacy” which is at the core of the open records fight for adoptees. Both Wingate and Glaser write from the angle of authors/researchers delving into history to develop a unique narrative. Their gifts in using facts to craft a compelling story know no bounds. I write from the lens of an adoptee while Hoffmann’s experience is that of an adoptive parent. The panelists will share how their personal journeys impacted their books.

Here’s the background to the panelists and their works:
Wingate’s novel, BEFORE WE WERE YOURS, shares a story of trauma and injustice typical of mid-twentieth century adoptions.
Glaser’s AMERICAN BABY (non-fiction) tells the shocking truth about postwar adoption in America, told through the true, bittersweet story of one teenager, the son she was forced to relinquish, and their search to find each other.
Jeff Hoffman’s novel, OTHER PEOPLE’S CHILDREN, tells the story of a birthmother who reclaims her child four days after the baby goes home with her adoptive parents. Everything explodes when the adoptive parents, and the baby, disappear without a trace.
My debut memoir, TWICE A DAUGHTER, is about my five-year search for birth relatives, a saga brought on by personal health issues. My tale depicts the complicated journey that adoptees from the closed adoption era must navigate in order to get at sealed adoption records, while trying to balance relationships with their adoptive and birth families.
