I’m Not Washing My Hair Today!

Not washing my hair today has nothing to do with whether the need is there. And I’m not lazy or depressed.  Boycotting all my hair products (shampoo, crème rinse, mousse, hair spray) isn’t the reason either. My split ends are being saved from further damage by the fraying warmth of the blow dryer because that’s on the taboo list today too. The goal of not washing my hair is because I decided to give myself permission to ‘not do’ it.

It’s certainly not a big deal to have dirty hair for one or two days (even with dry shampoo three days is a stretch for me).  I will don one of my favorite ball caps, tuck my messy brown tresses up inside the seams and be off for the day with a pair of sunglasses and lipstick like the rest of the yoga mommas in the suburbs.  The point is: I do have time to wash my hair, but I’m choosing ‘not to’. Replacing the mundane in pursuit of other interesting quests is the goal today.

My rigid daily schedule has been bogging me down. Creativity and self-expression has suffered. Sunrise coffee, word mincing on an old Macbook, and Hatha yoga already happened. So did morning meditation.  All healthy habits priming the pump for inspiration. So instead of hopping into my Tahoe, battling the other construction weary wackos who are checking their iphones, I’m looping the laces of my Asics and leaving my cell in my purse on the kitchen counter.

When I return from my sojourn on the asphalt trails that snake around the shores of Lake Michigan, I am heading straight for my computer.  That sweaty ball cap will perch above my makeup free face for hours as I outline the creative vision emerging from my walk. Each time my fingers try to reach the locks sequestered in my hat, I will be reminded that today I have permission to let my wander where it leads, mapping innovation without handcuffs of a schedule or routine.  It’s not a given that much innovation will result, but I’m giving it a try. I have given myself permission.
