The Nature of Revelation

A couple weeks ago I was in a neighbor’s yard and commented on a beautiful weeping cherry tree tucked in the corner of a flowerbed.

She looked at the tree, buzzing with bees, and said, “Oh, it’s the funniest thing — I thought it was dead. Then out of the blue it started budding.”

I smiled at the thought of how spring does that — it startles us with these sweet, brave buds just when we are about to lose hope, thinking all is lost.

Unlike the flowers slowly, but steadily popping up and gently unfolding their bright bodies to the world, our inner “awakenings” are usually more herky-jerky.

Even our most numinous moments of “getting it” — the “ah-ha’s” that feel like a Brand New You is finally here, lesson learned! — have a slippery quality to them. It’s only right — a revelation is a truth un-veiled so that we can have our moment of clear-seeing, an opportunity to shift our view by a degree. And then it is re-veiled. Hidden again so we can work with a small bit of Truth at a time.

Awakening, revelation, these states of heightened sensitivity, are not something we are supposed to live in all the time. It would be too much. Life’s not linear like that.

The gift is to notice the moments of magic when they arise.

Letting ourselves be surprised.

Letting ourselves be changed.

And letting go of it being a certain way.

This is so much like physical (and emotional) “healing” as well. Oy, recovering from surgery is hard! This was a doozy for me. The stent (which they leave in the ureter for a week because of swelling) was removed yesterday, so I feel like I’ll be on the upswing now. And the surgeon was able to get the whole stone out — great news. Thanks for your notes and well-wishes.

In the past couple of weeks I’ve been asking myself these questions….

  • What is surprising me this season?
  • How can I come into states like wonder and surrender more fully? What do those words mean to me right now?
  • What’s sprouting? Where do I feel energized and creative?
  • If this is a System Upgrade happening in my being, what bugs would be fixed? What new features would I bring in? What would this new operating system be called? (I’ve named her Sophia.)

Moments of gratitude, clarity and insight…and then a landslide of doubt, worry, helplessness. Veiled, unveiled, veiled. All of it together helping me adapt, find my strength and know myself more deeply.

Wishing you a lovely week,
